Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in Sociology

The Undergraduate Programme in Sociology is a multidisciplinary, future-oriented programme designed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and implemented from the Academic Year 2024–2025.

Overview

The Undergraduate Programme in Sociology at Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science (Autonomous) is a dynamic, learner-centred programme designed to develop critical thinkers, socially responsible citizens, and future professionals in the fields of teaching, research, and social work. Anchored in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and implemented through the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), the programme offers academic flexibility, interdisciplinary learning, and multiple exit and progression pathways.

A distinctive strength of the programme lies in its activity-based and experiential learning ecosystem, where sociological knowledge is not merely taught but actively lived and applied. Classroom learning is enriched through field-based assignments, community studies, surveys, case studies, project work, and research presentations, ensuring that theoretical concepts are continuously linked with social realities. This deliberate integration of the “book-view” with the “field-view” enables students to critically interpret society in its local, regional, national, and global dimensions.

Students gain sustained exposure through a mandatory 120-hour internship, annual field trips, and interaction with practitioners from NGOs, educational institutions, research organisations, and community-based initiatives. Regular guest lectures, workshops, conferences, and seminars expose students to diverse professional pathways and contemporary sociological debates. Research-oriented students are trained and encouraged to present papers at state and national conferences, including platforms organised by the Indian Sociological Society.

Beyond academics, the programme fosters holistic development through student-led departmental initiatives such as Sociofiesta and Goenkarponn, which connect sociology with everyday life and cultural identity, and HUMAN–DOSTO, the Department’s social outreach club, which provides hands-on engagement with marginalised communities. Orientation (Genesis), continuous recognition (Sociofare Awards), and farewell programmes further strengthen student integration, motivation, and institutional belonging.

Through this carefully structured blend of theory, practice, research, and social engagement, the Undergraduate Programme in Sociology successfully equips students with analytical thinking, research competence, ethical sensitivity, communication skills, and civic responsibility—enabling them to achieve the Programme Specific Outcomes and transition confidently into higher education, professional roles, and meaningful social participation.
