Overview

The Department of Geography and Research Center at Parvatibai Chowgule College is a pioneering academic and research center in the State of Goa, offering a comprehensive cortege of programmes- BA in Geography, MA in Geography ,Postgraduate Diploma in Geo-informatics (PGDGIS) and Ph.D Programme.Apart from this ,the department runs various short term courses in GIS ,field techniques, QGIS etc.The department has evolved into a multidisciplinary center integrating physical and human geography, geospatial technologies, and applied research.It is also the center for EDUSAT of IIRS, Dehradun. It continues to play a pivotal role in shaping students into skilled geographers, researchers, and professionals through intensive teaching – learning and rigorous research coupled with various in house and outdoor student’s engagement. With well-equipped laboratories, active student clubs like GLOBE,outreach activities through “ Geographers for Sustainability”,newsletter and alumni networks, the department fosters a vibrant academic community. Various awards and scholarships have been instituted by the alumni and faculty for meritorious and economically disadvantage students. Over the decades, commitment towards the growth of the subject and expansion of geographical knowledge through teaching,research, consultancy and extension activities, has earned it, a stature of being one of the most eminent academic department in the State of Goa.

The Department has institutes the following awards / scholarship for the students of Geography.

The Pratima Naik Memorial Award is awarded to top scorer in the subject and girl student scoring highest marks in geography at undergraduate and postgraduate examinations respectively.
The M.S. Honrao and Dr. S. S. Hiremath Scholarship is awarded to needy meritorious postgraduate students of first year and second year respectively.
The Late Afroz Sheik Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a postgraduate student scoring highest in Semester I & II and who is economically disadvantaged.
Dr. N. N. Sawant and Dr. S. S. Hiremath Scholarship for GIS Study is awarded to a postgraduate student scoring highest in Geoinformatics and who is economically disadvantaged.

Teaching & Learning method

The department offers core courses in Physical Geography, human Geography, Geoinformatics, Cartography, Spatial Studies and an array of allied electives. The teaching learning methodologies focus on self- focused learning through problem based learning, laboratory experiments, field works and project works. The faculty has expertise in specialized fields of geography, which ensure that their experience is transcended to the students through discussion forums, workshops, seminars, field works and research work. The department emphasizes that the students participate in intercollegiate events, present papers in conferences, assist faculty in research works and undertake internships The department has the necessary ICT-enabled infrastructure to enable curious learners to acquire essential skills and knowledge. This helps to develop expertise in multiple domains of geography.

One of the best practise is students engagement through peer tutoring. This provides a platform for advance learners to assist slow learners to boost their self confidence and improve academic performance .

The department aims to develop skills of fieldwork, survey and research to seek suitable employment as teachers, researchers, surveyors, GIS analysts, cartographers and in allied fields like tourism and regional planning.
