Overview
Established in 1962 as one of the institution's oldest pioneering departments, the Department of English at CES’s Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science (Autonomous) offers a robust, autonomous curriculum designed to foster comprehensive student development. Our program is an intensive blend of Literature, Allied fields, and skill-based courses ranging from 19th and 20th-century English Literature, World Literature, and Linguistics to contemporary studies in Media, Film, and Gender Representation. Guided by faculty experienced in Literary Criticism, Goan Literature, Creative and Media Writing, we utilize modern educational technology to ensure our academic delivery remains cutting-edge and engaging.
A defining feature of our department is the vibrant experience offered beyond the classroom, which is central to our vision of comprehensive education. We actively foster student growth through signature events like ‘The Bard by the Mandovi – The Shakespeare Festival, Goa (a one-of-a-kind one-day Inter-school/HSSC multi-event competition) and ‘Pegasus’ (a one-of-a-kind two-day inter-collegiate multi-event competition).
Furthermore, initiatives like the ‘Talking Tree Series’ and various Creative Writing workshops provide exclusive opportunities for students to interact with professional writers, journalists, dramatists, and editors. These platforms are designed not just for academic enrichment, but to hone vital interpersonal, organizational, and managerial skills, ensuring our students develop into confident, well-rounded professionals.
This combination of rigorous academics and practical exposure ensures that graduates emerge as critical thinkers and eloquent speakers, capable of producing high-quality creative work for print and electronic media. Our students are well-equipped for diverse careers in English Language Teaching, Literary Criticism, Linguistics, and Media Studies.
We invite students who have completed their HSSC in any stream to apply; if you are well-versed in English, technologically savvy, and possess a genuine passion for language, literature, and creativity, this programme is designed for you.

We mould our students for careers related to linguistics, research, allied media, and education, while ensuring that they are prepared to chart their own path in which ever career they choose. We believe that our programme contributes to the overall development of an empathic, ethical, and responsible member of society.
