The Undergraduate Programme in French is a multidisciplinary, future-oriented programme designed in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and implemented from the Academic Year 2023–2024.

Overview

The Double Major BA Degree Programme in French offers a rigorous, interdisciplinary education designed to develop students into confident, ethical, and globally aware graduates. Anchored in key qualification descriptors—understanding, use, communication, expansion, and application of knowledge—the programme fosters linguistic and literary competence alongside critical thinking and social awareness. Students acquire a coherent and systematic understanding of French and Francophone literatures, literary movements, genres, and theoretical frameworks, while developing the ability to read, write, and speak with clarity and analytical depth. Emphasis is placed on understanding language as a dynamic force in a changing world, enabling learners to situate texts and ideas within broader contexts of class, caste, gender, community, region, politics, and culture, both local and global. Through critical engagement with French and Francophone texts, students reflect on their roles as Indian citizens of the world, cultivating ethical awareness and sensitivity to difference. The programme prioritizes effective communication across platforms—academic, professional, digital, and public—preparing graduates to share knowledge through essays, research projects, and media. With strong career orientation, the programme opens pathways in teaching, translation, publishing, media, communication, and allied fields, while encouraging lifelong intellectual engagement and responsible global citizenship.

PO1: DISCIPLINARY KNOWLEDGE AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Students will acquire well developed skills in comprehending and reproducing both oral and written French, alongside the ability to collect, analyze, synthesize, and summarize information across various subjects. Through this, they will be able to compose, construct, and create their own literary works whilst fostering a personal style of expression by enhancing their creativity through lifelong learning.

Students will demonstrate the ability to express, describe, discuss, and explain in both oral and written French across real-life situations encompassing multidisciplinary fields such as social interactions, banking, marketing, tourism, hospitality, and medicine. Additionally, they will work effectively either individually or in small groups, utilizing a range of multimedia tools to accomplish tasks. Through this process, they will cultivate teamwork, cooperation, coordination, and acquire life skills and soft skills essential for navigating and adapting to a globalized environment.

Students will demonstrate vocational proficiency in both functional French and Francophone literature, showcasing practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional competencies pertinent to their chosen field(s). Additionally, they will exhibit research aptitude, including the ability to identify opportunities, create ideas, and apply knowledge practically, fostering a culture of innovation and contributing to societal and literary advancement.

Students will acquire a versatile skill set, enhancing language proficiency, intercultural competence, and adaptability across personal and professional domains. They will engage in meaningful conversations, adeptly debating and evaluating diverse life situations, including education, economic and social values, literary movements, and societal roles of women, while also analyzing distinctions between India and France. The programme intends to foster ethical and socially responsible engagement within varied cultural and societal landscapes.
